Winter Resident Profile - Monica Leap - 2008 Juried Winter Resident 
In a world progressively becoming more machined and mass produced, the simplest of everyday interactions never fail to humble and amaze me. Moments where we share a drink, sit in solitude, or stand in another's embrace serve to show how similar we all are. I create in an effort to bridge the growing distances between people. By playing with the simplicity of brush and line on the vessel form, I engage the viewer through depictions of these human moments. The timelessness of black and white and the warmth of the naked clay body compose my color palate. Largely self-narrative and thus somewhat voyeuristic, these pots serve as little windows into my life. However, I believe the story told within these windows is one empathized by people on a collective level. These fragments and reflections hold a presence that is mysterious yet revealing, delicate yet strong, and intimate yet universal. 
Representing more than just the metaphor of the vessel as human figure, what I create symbolizes a return of intimacy to the home. I create objects meant to be held and viewed by an individual. In that exchange, the meditation I experience in the making then extends to the viewer. Negating the confines of gallery walls, the viewer is allowed a medium through which to slow down, breathe, and appreciate the often hidden nuances of the present, while also sensing a subtle connection to the history with the maker. |
