LEGENDS
Gala Awards - 2009
In 2007 Watershed initiated the Watershed LEGENDS Awards, which
honors those artists in the field that have given significantly
to those who follow. As an organization of artists, Watershed
feels it appropriate to give honor to our colleagues who have
given so much to our field. In 2007 we initiated our Legends
Awards, with a committee of the board selecting awardees that
we feel have given significantly. Our first awardees were Bill
Daley, John Mason, and Karen Karnes.
Watershed is hosted its second LEGENDS Gala Friday November
6, 2009, to honor four "legends" in the field - Ruth Duckworth,
Jim Melchert, Don Reitz & Toshiko Takaezu. The Gala was
attended by 150 friends, artists, collectors, gallerists, and
curators.
The exhibition LEGENDS:Watershed Artists Honor Artists
was presented at SOFA Chicago, November 6-8, as part of the
SOFA Special Exhibition program. The exhibit featured over twenty
significant works from the four artists. In addition to the
exhibition, the SOFA Lecture Series included the lecture LEGENDS:
What makes them great?, presented by American Craft Magazine
Guest Editor, Janet Koplos.
The
highlight of Watershed's LEGENDS activities was the LEGENDS
Awards Gala on Friday, November 6. With the famed Arts Club
of Chicago as the backdrop for the benefit gala, Matt Nolen
and Judith S. Schwartz presided as the Master and Mistress of
Ceremonies. Matt Nolen made a presentation about Watershed and
its program in Maine, touching on several images and names of
artists in the crowd. Throughout the evening Judith Schwartz
eloquently presented histories of each honoree, finding the
heart of each through her words.
With the recent death of Ruth Duckworth, a touching video was
presented in her absence (view
the video on-line) with her representative Thea
Burger accepting the LEGENDS Award on her behalf. A second video
presentation followed for Toshiko Takaezu, who was unable to
travel to Chicago for the event; Frank Paluch of Perimeter Gallery
accepted the LEGENDS Award on her behalf.
During
the dinner program awards were presented to Jim Melchert and
Don Reitz, each who took a few minutes to share some stories,
and accept the award. Melchert wove a wonderful story about
"cracks" and "imperfections" around an encounter with furniture
legend George Nakashima. Reitz expressed his amazement at being
recognized for a life of "playing with mud!", and shared his
jovial spirit and wide smile while the crowd at the dinner sang
a rousing Happy Birthday in celebration of his 80th!
Planning is already underway for a 2011 LEGENDS
event - stay tuned!
